🎤 Lesson 29 – Stress in French
Learn where to place the stress in French sentences.
📘 1. Simple explanation
In French, the'stress (the strongest syllable) has a very simple rule:
The stress is always on the last syllable of the group of words
Unlike other languages, in French you don't choose where to place the stress. It's always at the end!
FRENCH
Accent at the end
my handHER
ENGLISH
Variable accent
HOworn
💡 What is a "group of words"?
It's a group of words that are pronounced without a pause. For example: "my house" (2 words, 1 group), "the black cat" (3 words, 1 group).
✨ 2. Examples
The stress always falls on the last syllable.
my house
my handHER
The emphasis is on "his""
the car
the wayYOUD
The emphasis is on "tu""
a little black cat
a little cat BLACK
The emphasis is on "black" (last word of the group)
🎯 Important rule
In French, you don't choose where to place the stress. It's automatically on the last syllable of the word group. That's what gives French its characteristic rhythm!
💬 3. Mini-situation
The teacher:
«In French, we always pronounce the last syllable stronger. »
✅ Rule of stress
Example :
«My maiHER »
✅ Emphasis on "SOUND""
📝 Important note:
When you speak French, try to put a little more emphasis on the last syllable of each group of words. This will make your French sound more natural!

💪 Practical exercise:
Say "my house" with more emphasis on the "SON" sound. Do the same with "the car" (emphasizing the "TU" sound). Practice this rule to make it automatic!
✍️ 5. Interactive exercise
Underline the syllable that carries the stress.
1. "ma-ma-son" →
2. "le-voi-tu-re" →
3. "little cat" →
