27. Similar sounds [ø] and [œ]

🎵 Lesson 27 – Similar sounds [ø] and [œ]

Learn to distinguish and pronounce these "eu" sounds in French

📘 1. Simple explanation

In French, there are two similar but different "eu" sounds. As with [o]/[ɔ], the difference lies in the..."mouth opening :

[ø]

SOUND CLOSED

Mouth almost closed

Example :

little

[œ]

OPEN SOUND

Mouth more open

Example :

sister

💡 Tip to feel the difference:

Pronounce "peu" [ø] → rounded lips, mouth almost closed. Now "sœur" [œ] → mouth more open, as if you were hesitating "euuh"!
