📘 1. Simple explanation
In French, there are two similar but different "o" sounds. As with [e]/[ɛ], the difference lies in the..."mouth opening :

In general, the sound [o] (closed) is written "o", "ô", "au", "eau". The sound [ɔ] (open) is also written "o" but in different positions. The context and position within the word help to determine the sound.
