Differences
Past tense
→ Short, completed action.
Imperfect
→ Description, habit, context.
Examples
• The weather was nice (imperfect tense) and I opened the window (past perfect tense).
• I was walking (imperfect tense) when I saw (past perfect tense) my friend.

Yesterday, it was raining (imperfect). I took an umbrella (past tense) and I went out (past perfect).
